Digicel supports GKC

TELECOMMUNICATIONS service provider Digicel, yesterday continued their support of various sports in Guyana, when they presented a cheque for an undisclosed sum to the Guyana Karate College (GKC), who will be partnering with the Association of Shotokan Karate, to compete in next month’s International Daigaku Cup. The tournament will be held from July 3 to 8 in Toronto Canada and karatekas from around the world, will compete in kumite, kata, embu and bonkai techniques.
According to GKC director Wayne Orderson, Guyana’s chances at being successful at the championships are great, since the core of the team is made up of young karatekas, who are presently on top of their game.
“We have karatekas of the calibre of Alliyah Wong, Philip Ramalho, Eric Hing, Tyler Orderson, Yannick Rameshwar and Kerry Ramkumar who will be making up the Guyana team and, based on their performances in recent times, we are sure to be successful in this championship,” Orderson told Chronicle Sport, adding that the team trains on a daily basis at the Malteenoes Sports Club pavilion.
Meanwhile, with regard to the construction of the GKC’s Academy at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, Orderson said the blue print for the steel frame has been handed over to the firm who is responsible for putting together same, which should be handed over to the contractors by August month-end.
“While they are putting together the steel structure, we are working on the foundation to accommodate this structure, so when they are finished with that, we will put it in place along with the roof and within the next nine to 12 months, we should have the Academy and dojo completed, with the aid of corporate Guyana as well.”
