— employees apply training techniques to protect patrons
FOUR fire tenders yesterday afternoon raced to the Sol Gas Station on Vlissengen Road after employees observed smoke emanating from the vent of an AC unit.
The employees immediately telephoned the Guyana Fire Service and the GPF, who responded within three minutes of the call. The gas station was shut down for about an hour, while fire and police officers carried out brief investigations on the premises. The Guyana Chronicle was told that an AC unit may have overheated, causing the smoke.
Speaking with the media after the incident, owner of the gas station, Mr Robin Lowe, said he was unsure what had caused the AC unit to smoke. Immediately after the GFS had determined that the premise was safe, the gas station management contacted the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) as well as private electricians.
Mr. Robin Lowe explained that the GPL crew was called in to examine the exterior wiring of the building, while private electricians were called to examine the interior wiring of the building.
Asked about workers’ response, Mr Lowe said his employees had immediately applied the training they received by arming themselves with fire extinguishers, while others took other measures to ensure the safety of potential customers.
The gas station, Mr. Low said, sports a total of nine fire extinguishers, six on the outside where the pumps are located, and three within the building.
The Sol Service Station on Vlissengen Road was commissioned earlier this year by President Donald Ramotar in a simple ceremony held at the location.
