… calls for Sinnette and Corbin
REIGNING national light heavyweight champion Kwesi ‘Lightning Assassin’ Jones has already begun to look past his opponent for next Friday in Kelsie George of Berbice and called on the matchmakers of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) to set up a ring date with both Kirt Sinnette and Shawn Corbin. “This fight will not go the distance. I am hungry and in a devastating mood and definitely Kelsie will feel the wrath of Kwesi Jones, when he steps into the ring next Friday and I will be going for a quick knockout to show that it does not matter who is placed before me, as I want Sinnette and Corbin.”
According to Jones (9-2), the punishment he has in store for George (0-3), would be nothing in comparison to the pain he suffered at the hands of Troy Lewis, Edmond De Clou and James Walcott, three fights which he lost.
“He needs to know his place and, seeing that Lewis, De Clou and Walcott failed to give him the lesson he really needs to learn, I will take up the mantle of professor and teach him it, with the impressive knockout being used as a message for Corbin, who made excuses last month and Sinnette.
In fact, I want Sinnette seeing that he has what I want and that is the WBC/CABOFE light heavyweight title and I need it. But if Corbin jumps out of his shoes and asks to be placed before me, heaven help him cause I will be destroying him severely,” said Jones.
Asked to comment on his inactiveness, following his last bout against Cleveland Fraser, whom he knocked out to successfully retain his title, Jones said he was doing a 9 to 5 to earn his keeps, while he visited the gym to stave off any signs of ring rust.
He cautioned George not to take their encounter lightly, as the long layoff has only served to make him stronger in more areas than one.
“I am not being disrespectful to him, as I have never been to any of my opponents. But in reality, Kelsie is barking up the wrong tree and what he needs to know is that the bark of this tree will hurt him to an extent, that he may contemplate quitting the sport the same night,” said Jones.
He added, “Sinnette’s coach knows of my ability and he is keeping his man away, while I think Corbin heard of it and decided to make an excuse not to come for our ring date last month. Maybe, just maybe somebody should have warned Kelsie and even ask him to carefully check his thoughts before he signed the contract.
This will be no easy fight for him, De Clou and Walcott promised to unleash a brutal licking on him and they did not. Well I promise to destroy him and I Kwesi’ Lightning Struck Assassin’ Jones will keep my word and humiliate him badly.”
Other bouts on the card would see WBC/CABOFE and national middleweight champion Edmond ‘Wonder Boy’ De Clou defending his local title against Joel Mc Rae, Dominican Republic-based Clive Atwell matching gloves with Rudolph Fraser for the super featherweight crown and Gladwin Dorway opposing David Thomas.
There will also be four amateur bouts organised by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, who, along with the GBBC and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, is coordinating the monthly ProAm card, which has been giving boxers on the local scene and even in the Caribbean, an upward mobility.
An admission fee of $1 000 for the night’s action will be charged for adults, while children are asked to pay half price.
