In Berbice…

Son kisses mother’s foot in open court to avoid seven-day incarceration
BUDHURAM Ishwar, 38, of Lot 163 Smythfield, New Amsterdam, Berbice, confessed to New Amsterdam Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo that he used a series of expletives at his mother’s home while he was under the influence of alcohol.
But on Tuesday he openly expressed regret at his action, and displayed reverence and respect to his mother by bending and kissing her foot at the New Amsterdam Court.
Upon pleading guilty to the charge of abusive language, Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo told Ishwar to apologise to his mother for his behaviour; and Tilleawattie Sukhoo, on hearing the court’s statement, removed one of her slippers and told her son, ‘you know what you have to do’. He then got on his knees in open court and kissed his mother’s foot, before being ordered to sign a bond to keep the peace for one year, failing which he would be imprisoned for a seven-day period.
