… Dharry and Fraser to battle for super bantamweight title
REIGNING World Boxing Council/Caribbean Boxing Federation (WBC/CABOFE) bantamweight champion Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry will match gloves with Rudolph Fraser for the national super bantamweight title in the feature bout of this month’s ProAm boxing card. The 24th edition of the monthly contest which is a joint collaboration between the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), punches off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on 29th June from 20:00hrs.
The Dharry/Fraser bout is set for 12 rounds. WBC/CABOFE and national middleweight champion Edmond ‘Wonder Boy’ De Clou, who will also be in action, will defend his national title against Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Joel McRae also in 12-round contest.
As has been evident in the recent Friday Night Fights (FNF) where several boxers engaged each other in trilogies, the De Clou/McRae matchup will be another trilogy with De Clou, who defeated former European middleweight champion Howard Eastman for the national title, holding the two-nil advantage.
Another local champion, this time Kwesi ‘Lightning Struck Assassin’ Jones, who was scheduled to defend his light heavyweight title against Shawn Corbin last month, will match gloves with Berbice’s Kelsie George, who is yet to win a professional bout, in a six-round encounter.
The other professional bout on the card pits debutant Gladstone Dorway against David Thomas, who lost his last bout to Anson Greene in a four-round junior welterweight contest.
The boxers will ink their names to their respective contracts today, while intense gym preparation is scheduled to get under way from tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Chronicle Sport was reliably informed that the WBC has removed the flyweight category, in which Guyana’s Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques was scheduled to compete as the CABOFE champion from their upcoming Championship, and has replaced it with the cruiserweight division.
This decision has opened the door for former World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite to redeem himself, following his humiliating first round knockout at the hands of Barbados Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox earlier this year for the WBC/CABOFE heavyweight title.
