Hammer battered woman critical, husband survives suicide

A THIRTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD woman was struggling for life at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) yesterday, after she suffered hammer blows about the body, allegedly inflicted by her reputed husband on Saturday. The mother of 10, Sheron Goodridge, of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, was still in a critical condition up to press time while her alleged assailant, Andrew Rodney, 40, was in a similar state in the same institution.
Reports said the man had attempted suicide by ingesting a poisonous substance but he survived.
The two were hospitalised following a domestic quarrel during which Rodney armed himself with a hammer and beat his wife at their home where he also drank poison.
When the Guyana Chronicle visited the house yesterday, only children were present and they said all the adult relatives were at the hospital.
But spattered blood was observed on the curtains in the lower flat of the range building.
It is reported that, while the children were sleeping, the couple were in a conversation but, after Goodridge told her reputed husband that she wanted to seek employment overseas, he became enraged and repeatedly hit her with a hammer.
Neighbours were also tight-lipped about the incident yesterday and the police could not be reached for comment.
