OUR police rightly charge motorists for speeding where speed limits are officially posted. However, it seems unfair, if not illegal, to ambush and charge motorists using the lonely, bush-lined, often cow-filled road connecting the new Berbice River Bridge with the Corentyne-New Amsterdam highway at Palmyra. This road has no speed limit sign posted, but motorists are charged for allegedly speeding on it. Indeed, one wonders if the speed limit for this road was ever ‘gazetted.’
It must be emphasised that this new road branches off the Corentyne- New Amsterdam highway which, as a matter of fact, has varying speed limits ranging from 40, 50, 65, 80 kilometres per hour posted at various points between New Amsterdam and Moleson Creek. Therefore, one must guess which of these or any other speed limit is applicable to this new road, even by extrapolation.
Many questions arise about the modus operandi of our police force, including the misuse of taxpayers’ dollars and undue harassment of motorists.
Also of note is the contrast with the civility in many other countries where motorists are decently forewarned that speeding is routinely monitored as opposed to our police playing “ketch-a-koo” or ‘hide & seek’ with hapless Guyanese.
