Five fire tenders turned up and managed to contain the conflagration to that building.
The firemen acted quickly, using a hydraulic lift to douse the flames that raged through two floors of the four-storey concrete building.
The fire broke out around 20:00hrs and quickly consumed the supermarket on the ground floor and a storage area on the second floor.
The GFS managed to save the building next door, Ashmin’s Trading Complex.
One report said that after a generator had started up, there was a loud explosion and soon thick smoke was seen billowing from the building.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said investigations into the origin of the fire are still ongoing.
