PPP/C should not take GHRA actions lightly

WHEN the PPP/C got into Parliament with that one seat minority government little did they realise that they were up against mighty enemies who were perfecting the tools of their trade. They knew fully well the political opposition’s standing that governance would not be a stroll in the park, however, the scope and depth of their vengeance vis – a – viz their stupidity was not forthcoming to say the least, hence the PPP/C administration were ill-prepared to meet those challenges. These traditional enemies have been on the warpath ever since showing no signs of let up suffice it to say they are gloating in the government’s seeming demise. They are soaking up every minute of the PPP/C’s hapless situation.

The government is now well aware of the operations of the opposition, but I am quite sure they were not aware of the enemy that lay hidden behind the mask of a human rights organisation. I make mention of the Guyana Human Rights Authority GHRA an organisation that is supposed to be championing the rights of the people, human beings. They have come out of the woodwork making political remarks.
That article in the Stabroek News “Ruling party appears in denial of election results” is insensitive to the rights of the people who they claim to represent. To think that an organisation which should be non-political and bipartisan to come out and make such comments shows clearly whose side they are on. The GHRA is building up a pressure base for the opposition to make the lives of ordinary citizens more difficult to endure. How much, if any, they care for the people bears a big question mark. Being a non political organisation does not preclude you from making comments that are political, far from it. What I am saying is why make such comments now? Is it to remind the government of its obligation to the people to lift their miserable lives out of an already difficult situation? Certainly not! Being a minority government is not something new to the political stage, rather, this should be a blessing that opposition and government can get down to the sensible work of nation building. The GHRA article was meant to add salt to the government’s wound and nothing else.

The PPP/C administration should not take such actions of the GHRA lightly and must register their disapproval at the highest level of McCormack’s organisation. They should send a strongly worded letter expressing their disgust at the political rantings of an organisation that is supposed to be concerned with the social issues of the ordinary man and not to be engaged in political mischief.
