High winds cause shutdown of GPL’s 60Hz Demerara system

HIGH winds have broken a number of power poles on the East Coast of Demerara, resulting in a 60Hz shutdown of the Demerara System, a Guyana Power and Light release said last evening. Reports of broken poles were received from Mon Repos, Enmore, Mahaica and Mahaicony. There is also a fault on the feeder supplying power to Prashad Nagar, Subryanville, Kitty, Alberttown and Queenstown.
“GPL is working to restore power to all affected areas but pleads with members of the public to avoid fallen wires and to report any network fault in your area,” the statement said.
“Your kind cooperation is solicited. As the high winds continue, GPL urges all members of the public to be vigilant.”
