Accused in unusual murder trial freed

JUSTICE  Franklyn Holder  yesterday  freed  accused Devon Paul after a voir dire (a trial within a trial) failed to disclose that the accused had voluntarily made statements  attributed to him by the police. The accused,  represented by Lawyers Debra Backer and Emily Dodson,  was charged with having on October 18, 2005,  murdered a  person unknown.
Following the voir dire,  counsel Backer  submitted  that the only evidence against the accused is a statement  that was not  voluntary and, as such,  was  insufficient to call on the accused for a defence.
The judge agreed and discharged the accused.
