With Army focus on education…

Best opens first GDF 2012 basic training course
CHIEF of Staff (COS) of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Commodore Gary Best officially declared open the first Basic Recruit Course (BRC) for 2012, on Thursday, against the background of the Army’s heightened focus on the education of its ranks.
One hundred and fifty-five recruits began the training at Colonel John Clarke Military School, situated at Tacama, Berbice River, on March 26.
In addition, to military skills, the programme also includes an intense back to school foundation level in Mathematics and English Language, complemented by higher levels which would-be soldiers will continue throughout their military career.
Best, speaking in the main lecture hall at Tacama, told the participants that the Force will educate them right up to university level, once they are capable enough.
He stressed that education is the foundation of knowledge and so the Force remains committed to its ranks in that regard.
“The Guyana Defence Force is committed to providing each soldier with the opportunity to acquire academic education in addition to military skills,” Best stated, adding, that it is part of the Army ensuring that its ranks are able to maintain a good standard of living and social conduct.
He commended the recruits for their choice to serve the country and pointed out that their tasks ahead would require great sacrifice.
Best explained that the GDF is an institution of instruction and that no physical violence is permitted against any student on any course.
“The training staff has a responsibility to train you not oppress you, but they will train you hard so you fight easy,” he advised.
Best also told them that, after training, they must be role models to the youths when they return to their villages and work to keep their communities safe from crime and disasters.
Recruits will also be coursed in a number of other areas, including Foot and Arms Drills, Field Craft, Map Reading and Navigation, National Policy, Skill-at-Arms, Military Law, Minor Tactics, Internal Security and Physical Training, over the next 10 weeks.
