Jansen’s double propels Retrieve Unknowns into semi-finals
THANKS to Marcello Jansen’s brace, last year’s runner-up Retrieve Unknowns made good on their predictions for this year’s tournament, when they defeated Sheriff Squad 3-1 last Tuesday night in their quarter-final encounter of this year’s Banks DIH Linden Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ competition at the Amelia’s Ward/Wismar bus park. Jansen found the back of the net in the 3rd and 12th minutes of the contest and along with Darrel George’s 7th minute goal enabled his team – who lost to ousted champions Eagles 3-1 in last year’s final – to record a similar margin of victory over Sheriff Squad, for whom Colwyn Daniels scored in the 9th minute. Also recording victories on the night were Amelia’s Ward Russians, Porkerburg and Hard Knocks, who defeated Rough and Rugged, Half Mile/One Mile and Pepper Skull respectively while in the two exhibition matches, Overseas All Stars and Team Greatness defeated Linden Educational Institute and LUSCL respectively. In the first match of the evening, Pepper Skull and Porkerburg played to a 1-1 stalemate, with Robin Adams breathing some life into Pepper Skull’s team with his 19th minute strike, after Damion Williams had found the back of the net for Porkerburg, who eventually won the encounter 2-1 on penalty kicks, in the 11th minute. Carlos Grant scored the lone goal in the 14th minute of the second encounter between Amelia’s Ward Russians and Rough and Rugged that was won 1-0 by the former, the same scoreline that was recorded for the Hard Knocks versus One Mile/Half Mile matchup, with Ray Bobb-Semple being the successful man in the 6th minute. In the first exhibition game, Overseas All Stars, led by goals from Roy Mingo (3rd) and Jermaine Alfred (6th) respectively, defeated LEI 2-0, while Jason Blair (4th, 7th), Rawle ‘Boney’ Gittens (12th, 14th) and Mortimer Stewart’s 8th minute goals, powered Team Greatness to a commanding 5-2 victory over LUSCL, for whom John Murray and Del Coxin struck in the 9th and 11th minutes respectively.
Tonight’s semifinal action which takes place at the same venue as the quarterfinals, will see Porkerburg take on Hard Knocks and Retrieve Unknowns face Amelia’s Ward Russians while the two exhibition matches pits LUCSL oppose Bosai, Overseas All Stars clash with Team Greatness and Top Class challenge Bankers Trust. Action commences at 18:00hrs.
