Bystander accidentally shot by police
– as ranks attempt to arrest cutlass wielding cane-cutter
A BYSTANDER was accidentally shot by the police in Berbice yesterday as ranks attempted to arrest a cutlass wielding man who was disrupting the peace at No. 77 Village Housing Scheme in Corentyne, Berbice. The police, in a media release, said the incident occurred around 11:15 hrs yesterday when its ranks responded to a report of a man armed with a cutlass and behaving disorderly and using indecent language at No. 77 Village Housing Scheme in Corentyne, Berbice.
On arrival, the ranks approached cane-harvester Anthony Dyaram, 26 years, of No. 77 Village, who reportedly attacked the police with the cutlass.
“This caused the police to resort to the use of force and a round was discharged which struck Mohamed Inshan, 32 years, of Queenstown, Corriverton, and who was in a nearby yard, to his left leg,” the police reported.
Inshan was admitted to the Skeldon Hospital, while Dyaram has been arrested.
The police said investigations are in progress.
