Constitutional motion halts progress in ‘Mufti’ sex case

IMAM Nizam Ali, the Muslim scholar known as ‘Mufti’, of ‘A’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, made yet another court appearance yesterday. But the case, in which he is charged with engaging in sexual intercourse with boys under the age of 12, at the Turkeyen Masjid, did not proceed at Sparendaam Court, also on the East Coast of Demerara.
Magistrate Alex Moore, presiding in camera, adjourned the proceedings to May 24, pending the outcome of an intervening constitutional motion.
Ali is alleged to have sexually assaulted seven boys where they, usually, go to take Quran and Arabic lessons from him, between December 2011 and January 2012.
Until the resumption in the Magistrate’s Court, the virtual complainants are being kept by the Child Care and Protection Agency.
