Burglary convict refused bail on robbery charge

STEPHAN Archer, 22, of Lot 58 Garnett Street, Newtown, was remanded to prison yesterday, on a charge of robbery with aggravation. Before Acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on April 17, in Alberttown, Georgetown, he robbed John Reynolds of belongings valued $72,000 and, at the time, made use of personal violence.
Police Sergeant, Denise Booker, prosecuting, said, about 14:45 hrs, the virtual complainant was going in his yard when the defendant attacked him from behind and lashed him with a piece of wood several times.
The prosecutor said the defendant took away the complainant’s bag and fled but another man, who was passing in a car, witnessed the robbery, gave chase and apprehended the defendant.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail for Archer, pointing out that he is not a first time offender and the booty was recovered in his possession.
The defendant denied knowledge of the crime but admitted that he was previously convicted of break and enter and larceny.
He will have to be back in court on April 23.
