THERE are many areas that need the critical attention of government. Perhaps, some are more doable than others. Government needs to continue to provide timely and as full a disclosure of details possible of any contracts or projects planned or in development. This would give more credence to the government’s position on transparency, accountability and corruption. The justice system, starting with crime prevention, detection and prosecution is in need of many doable fixes now. Also, problems with sanitation, flood control and vandalism need stronger action and monitoring. Another pressing need is for a date for local government elections before September.
A legitimate concern is whether too many reasons given for delays in implementing plans or projects can be fully justified. Another aspect of dealing with problems is whether there is an aggressive attempt to fix whatever parts could be done with available resources, instead of waiting on more comprehensive plans. Officials must make do with what is available and must show greater initiative by coming up with the best short-term solutions to match resources. Guyanese deserve no less.
