MINIBUS driver Rajnarine Sydial of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Sparendaam Magistrate, Alex Moore yesterday, to answer three charges: That, on April 13 at the Mon Repos Public Road, ECD, he drove his minibus while his breath alcohol level was above the legal limit; driving in a manner dangerous to the public; and failing to stop after an accident.
Sydial pleaded guilty to failing to stop after causing an accident, and driving under the influence, but entered a not guilty plea to dangerous driving.
Sydial admitted to having a few Guinness on the day in question, but claimed he was taking the minibus to a mechanic. Nevertheless, he could not properly explain how he collided with the rear end of a lorry parked in the corner of the road.
He was fined $7,500 for driving under the influence, and $20,000 for failing to stop after the accident. Moreover, he was placed on $100,000 bail for dangerous driving, with an alternative of five weeks’ imprisonment if the payments were not made by his next court appearance, on July 16.
