Car kills man on Vryheid’s Lust Public Road

LAWRENCE Gouveia, 59, a father of five, living at Lot 277 Second Street, East Cummings Lodge, died after being hit by a motor car on the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road, in another East Coast Demerara village, last Thursday night. He was returning home from a visit to friends, not far from where the accident, in which he was killed, took place.
Some eyewitnesses said the man was standing by the Presbyterian Church waiting to cross the road when he was struck and apparently, succumbed instantly.
There was a huge gash on his head and persons on the scene expressed outrage as they claimed that a passing ambulance refused to take the injured victim to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
The witnesses, who wish to remain anonymous, stated that the ambulance attendants left Gouveia on the roadway for a long time and he was already dead when the police took him to the GPH, where they waited some 15 minutes before porters moved his body.
A woman, who claimed to be the daughter of the deceased but did not give her name, told the Guyana Chronicle her father was killed at approximately 19:00 hrs.
She said it was her brother-in-law who telephoned to inform the family of the tragedy.
She said her father was very sickly and unable to work.
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle involved in the road fatality is in police custody.
