Councillors lament indiscipline at Pomona Secondary School

Former Member of Parliament (MP) and now Councillor of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Farouk Khan told the statutory meeting, on Tuesday, that he is fearless, because, whenever he speaks on issues in the Region, he is armed with facts. He said he spoke, at the last such meeting, about the indiscipline of some teachers of Pomona Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast and the falling standards at the institution and, when it was published in the press and aired on television as news, the Headmistress became annoyed and hurriedly called a staff conference and sent him a lawyer’s letter.
Armed with several clippings from daily newspapers which reported that some 164 teachers were dismissed from the Teaching Service last year for indiscipline, Khan said he wants the Teaching Service Commission, the Ministry of Education and the Regional Administration to investigate, without delay, the operations of Pomona Secondary School.
He said he would not retract the statement made at the previous RDC meeting about the indiscipline of some teachers and the falling standards at the school.
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Councillor, Ms. Linda Duncan supported Khan’s remarks about indiscipline at the school and agreed that the issue must be addressed by the RDC.
She also advocated the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools.
Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo said gang fighting in schools must not be tolerated and should be stamped out now.
AFC Councillor, Mr. Archie Cordis also lamented it and enquired what is being done to stop the indiscipline at the school.
