– sentence to follow Probation Report
WILSON Chan, who confessed to stabbing dead his ex-lover and giving her kerosene oil to drink in 2007, yesterday pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. Before Justice Franklyn Holder considered the sentence, defence counsel Mr. Satyesh Kissoon applied for, and was granted, a probation report.
That report and plea in mitigation will be presented to the court on April 30, when sentence will be passed.
Following yesterday’s guilty plea, lead prosecutor Miss Zamilla Ally told the court that the ill-fated woman was Louise Loretta Ramessar, 44, who had borne a child for the accused, but at the time of the incident — between the 10th and 17th October, 2007 — they had lived separately.
According to the prosecutor, based on a report received, Police Constable Quincy Alexander had gone to the home of Loretta Ramessar on the morning of September 10, where he had heard voices coming from one of the apartments. He knocked at the door, saying: “Police! Open up!”
The policeman heard a female voice from inside saying, “I can’t come to the door now. You have to break it down to come in.” Then he heard the said female voice saying, “Yes, I gon drink it.” And a male voice saying, “Drink it now!”
Becoming suspicious that something was happening, the policeman kicked open the apartment door and entered in time to see the accused, Wilson Chan, kneeling on a bed over Louise Ramessar with a knife in his right hand, and he saw the accused stab her to the left side of the abdomen.
Constable Alexander then pulled out his revolver, pointed it to the accused and told him to drop the knife, which he did.
The accused came off Louise Ramessar, and lay flat on the floor.
The woman was taken to hospital, and the accused was charged with attempted murder.
Louise Ramessar died on October 13, 2007, and a post-mortem done on October 17, 2007 revealed seven wounds on her body; but the cause of her death was given as peritonitis due to perforation of the intestines as a result of stab wounds.
Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, which is the thin issue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs.
The post-mortem also revealed that the woman was a diabetic and had bed sores.
