RESIDENTS of western Leguan who waged war with overtopping high tides last Friday have described this year’s Easter as one of the worst they have experienced.
Speaking with this publication via telephone, residents conceded that the water has receded somewhat, but they claim it had left a huge damper on their Easter celebrations, as they have been left exhausted from clean-up activities and have no spirit for the holiday.
One woman claimed that her several plans for this Easter have all been ruined, and even the children refuse to go out.
Extremely high spring tide and siltation of a koker have been confirmed as responsible for last Tuesday’s flood.
Residents say some vegetable crops and at least 40 house lots at Louisiana, Success and Phoenix villages have been adversely affected by the floods.
Public Works Minister Robeson Benn did everything he could to have the problem rectified.
Authorities hope to permanently seal the breach in the sea defences once the National Budget has been approved by the National Assembly in another two weeks.
Even though engineers had hoped life would have returned to normal for Leguan residents by Saturday afternoon, they were sadly mistaken. Residents are still very angry and sad at the situation in the village.
