PELE Masters Football club secured the largest margin of victory during the two playing days of the 2012 Georgetown Masters Football Association (GMFA) Mackeson Football tournament which was kicked off by Prime Minister Sam Hinds at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Saturday night. Pele Masters FC achieved this when they beat Conquerors Masters 5-1 as East Coast Masters and Beacon Masters head off in points in the Group stage playoff.
The tournament which will see twelve clubs playing in four groups will see the top two clubs of each group going through to the next round of eight while the losers of each group will play off for the Plate trophy.
The opening match saw Georgetown Football Club (GFC) winning 1-0 over Rastafari Patriots with their lone goal coming from Shawn Daniels in the 15th minute. The score line remained the same at the end of the first half and regular time.
Thomas United in the second match won 2-0 over Conquerors Masters with goals in the 42nd minute from Wayne Poulis and in the 58th minute from Errol Solomon.
Beacon Masters then took to the field against the all excited Brazimex who held them to a draw 1-1. Sherwin Grimes’ 42nd minute goal opened the scoring account for the Beacon Masters while Ceon Quintin’s equaliser in the 58th minute settled both teams sharing points.
Santos Masters created much excitement on the opening nigh to conclude the first day programme when they were forced to share points after a 1-1 draw with East Coast.
Ola Pedro’s 25th minute goal sent Santos in the early lead but it was only nine minutes later when Eon Dooker equalised.
Yesterday morning opening match up saw Houston Stars masters winning over Rastafari Patriots 2-1. Warren Parks’ 11th minute goal sent the new comers in the lead as pressure on the dreads forced them to make a critical mistake scoring in their own goal in the 20th minute sending the Stars 2-0. E. Phillips then netted in the 34th minute to seal the issue at 2-1.
Pele Masters then made an impressive start to the tournament with the 5-1 drubbing of Conquerors with goals from Sherwin Maxwell in the 15th and 18th minutes Dallas Sharples 14th minute, Derrick Gittens 1th minute and Rawle Jones in the 8th minute while conquerors masters got their lone goal from Dexter Wyles in the 42nd minute.
Linden’s Top Klass Masters were forced to feel the heat after squandering goal scoring opportunities which came back to haunt them at the end of regular time losing 2-1 to Beacon Masters.
Sherwin grimes 50th minute goal lead 1-0 after six minutes Brian Joseph converted for the Top Klass in the 56th minute as Lionel Grimes send the Beacon in the lead in the 59th minute to lead 2-1.
The concluding game for the day saw Berbician Hearts of Oaks Masters winning 2-0 over East Coast. Wesley Millington 21st minute goal sent the Berbicians in the lead in the first half as Franklyn Victor sealed the day with his contribution in the 53rd minute for their 2-0 victory.
The action continues tomorrow at the same venue and will see four matches starting at 18:00 hrs and will see GFC facing Houston Stars, while the second match will see Pele Masters meeting Thomas United as the third game will bring together Top Klass and Brazimex and in the last game Santos will face Berbice Hearts of Oaks.
The tournament is being sponsored by Mackeson, Star Party Rentals, Scott’s Jewelry, Sweet Point Charles Antenna Shop among others and will see over G$1m in cash and other individual prizes up for grabs.
