BCGI commissions heavy equipment for mining new bauxite deposits

PRIME Minister, Samuel Hinds yesterday participated in the commissioning of several pieces of heavy, light and auxiliary equipment by the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (BCGI) which will be used in a massive expansion of its operations in the Berbice River. The equipment was brought to Guyana from Jamaica, and includes 64 pieces of heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, trucks, graders and loaders, 30 light vehicles, including a bus and several Mitsubishi pick-ups and auxiliary equipment, such as forklifts, generators, lighting sets, tyre handlers, water trucks, service trucks and mechanic trucks.
The commissioning took place at the BCGI’s workshop compound at Aroima, Berbice River.
The equipment will be utilised in the mining of two new bauxite deposits in the Berbice River: the Kurubuka deposit and the Block 38 deposits. These combined are reputed to have deposits which could sustain mining for over 30 years.
Director on the BCGI Board, Neil Kumar, was among other Government officials at the commissioning.
