Miner refused bail on illegal gun, ammunition charges

GAVASKAR Chooraman, 34, of Lot ‘G’ Grove Trench Line, East Bank Demerara, was refused bail, by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday, on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He pleaded not guilty to the offences, particulars of which stated that, on March 31, he had a single barrel 12-gauge shotgun and four matching cartridges without being the holder of licences.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Trenton Lake, for Chooraman, said the defendant, who is a miner at Butterfly Landing, was not in possession of the firearm but was about to go in his hotel room when police followed him and found the gun and ammunition inside.
The lawyer said the defendant was now going into the room and had not been inside before.
However, Police Sergeant, Gordon Mansfield, prosecuting, said his facts differ and that the defendant was found with the firearm in his hands.
The prosecutor said a search was conducted and three cartridges were found in the man’s pocket and one in the shotgun.
The case was transferred to another court for May 18.
