NOVEMBER 28, 2011 will go down in history as an historic occasion; historic and memorable for the fact that the democratic process afforded the combined opposition the opportunity to have direct involvement in governance. It is a glorious opportunity, if I may add, for them to demonstrate to the people of Guyana that they can sit in council, and in a civilised manner get down to business with the people’s work. Theirs is the task to show a high degree of decorum and maturity, however, this kind of attitude is not forthcoming. What we do see is a pantomime show of sorts the effluent discharge which is offensive to all right thinking individuals. Guyanese have placed the opposition in an advantageous position to make a meaningful contribution to its welfare, and not to play out their own narrow political gimmickry. Guyanese can ill afford such nonsense at this critical stage of the country’s development. They detest the foolishness, hence, the call for fresh elections where a strong possibility exists.
The AFC is what one will categorize as a moderate partner in this newest form of foolishness. They, and I must give them credit for this, though with great reluctance abstained from voting in the last motion put forward by the government, thus creating an avenue for its safe passage. On the other hand APNU has made it quite clear that they are on a warpath willing and able to block government’s move at every turn; their programme is one of opposing everything put before them. Instead of being enablers of the developmental process, they have resorted to a planned agenda of being obstacles to progress.
I would strongly urge the opposition to be conscious of the fact that the opportunity afforded them this time would not be available the next time around so make good use of it, do not let the people down, do not squander your chances.
