Best announces…

Pile driving starting soon for Pomeroon Army base
CHIEF of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Commodore Gary Best has announced that pile driving, just off the mouth of Pomeroon River, will begin shortly to anchor the Army’s floating base in the Atlantic Ocean.
In an address to scores of residents and Government officials in the Regional Boardroom at Anna Regina yesterday, he said he was in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) to seek the Administration’s support to drive the piles into the ocean bed so the floating base can be deployed.
The Chief of Staff said the Army base will be located some one and a half miles from the mouth and be a checkpoint for boats or anything entering or leaving the Pomeroon River.
The top military officer said Police and Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officers will also be stationed at the base.
Best remarked that the country has lost large sums of revenue over the years as a result of illegal trading in the Pomeroon River and the Army will execute its duty without favour.
Minister Baksh, who made strong representations for the Army presence in the past when he was Chairman of Region 2, said he is happy that the river mouth will be now monitored.
