THE Roraima Bikers Club/Humphrey’s Bakery and Farm Products’ organised and sponsored sixth annual George ‘Boy Blue’ Cumberbatch Memorial cycling programme will pedal off around the inner circuit of the National Park at 09:00hrs on Saturday. Ten races are carded for the day’s programme commencing with the BMX 9 to 11 years two-lap race and culminating with the Open 30-lap race, of which Warren ‘40’ McKay is the defending champion, having won last year’s event while taking three prime prizes on the way.
McKay also won last year’s Category 1 and 2 10-lap event, while his RBC club mate Albert Philander is the defending champion of the Category 3 and 4 event, which also covers a distance of 10 laps.
Junior Niles and Monty Parris are the defending champions of the Veterans Under-50 and Over-50 categories respectively, while Kurt La Rose will look to defend his Junior/Juvenile crown for this programme.
Cyclists of the calibre of McKay, Niles, Philander, Alonso Greaves, Geron Williams, Robin Persaud and the two promising juniors in Raynauth Jeffrey and Paul De Nobrega, are expected to be in the saddle this year.
With the third and final leg of this year’s Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race scheduled to take place the following day in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), the afore-mentioned cyclists among others can use this event as a warm-up.
The day’s programme reads: 9-11 BMX (2 laps), 12-14 BMX (2 laps), Open BMX (4 laps), Junior/Juvenile (10 laps), Veterans Under-50 (5 laps), Veterans Over-50 (5 laps), Category 1 and 2 (10 laps), Category 3 and 4 (10 laps), Mountain/Upright Bikes Open (10 laps) and Racing Bikes (Open) 30 laps.
