KINGSTOWN, St Vincent – Adrian Barath was chosen to replace fellow opener Kieran Powell in the West Indies 13-member squad for the last two Digicel One Day Internationals against Australia in St Lucia this weekend. Barath has overcome his recent spell of injuries and gave firm evidence of his fitness with a hundred for his native Trinidad & Tobago against Guyana in their sixth round match of the Regional 4-Day Tournament last weekend at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
The 21-year-old Barath has played 12 ODIs for West Indies – who arrived in Castries yesterday – since his debut two years ago with the second ODI against India last December in Visakhapatnam, his previous match.
The 22-year-old Powell struggled at the top of the order in the three matches over the last week, managing just 20 runs from his three innings.
Barath, meanwhile, slammed 114 for Trinidad and Tobago in the Regional Four-Day match against Guyana last weekend, his first game back following injury, while he averages 28 from 12 ODIs, with one century.
The series is level at 1-1 after West Indies lost the opening game by 64 runs last Friday and won the second by five wickets last Sunday, with Tuesday’s third game ending in a dramatic tie.
Squad: Darren Sammy (captain), Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh Jr, Tino Best, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels.
Remaining match schedule for the ODIs is: Friday, March 23 and Sunday March 25, 4th and 5th Digicel ODI, at Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia.
