Guyana play Portugal in HSBC World Series opener on Friday

GUYANA’S National Sevens Team arrived in Hong Kong yesterday for the Cathay Pacific HSBC World Series Sevens Tournament after concluding a five-day training camp in Los Angeles at the USA Olympic Centre in Chula Vista where the team trained with Rugby USA. Reports from team manager Mike McCormack indicated that the team is fully fit, except Christopher Singh who is recovering from a groin injury, but the team is in high spirits and is looking forward to playing in the world’s premier Sevens Tournament.
On Friday, Guyana and Portugal will play the opening game to start the 24-team tournament at 16:00hrs Hong Kong time (04:00hrs – Friday, Guyana time). The tournament will be featured on television around the world. The U.S. NBC Network will broadcast coverage on the second and final days of the tournament.
Guyana are in Pool F in the first round of the tournament with Portugal, Russia and Japan. They will have to finish at least second in the Pool to go forward into the qualifying round of the tournament.
The first three teams in the final round will qualify as core teams to join the twelve core teams in the Sevens World Series.
Guyana play their second game against Russia to start day two of the tournament on Saturday 09:30hrs HK time (09:30hrs Friday, Guyana time) and its final Pool game against Japan will be contested at 14:38hrs HK time (02:38hrs Saturday, Guyana time).
