JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CMC) – Cricket South Africa said yesterday it was shocked and saddened by the tragic death of former West Indies top order batsman Runako Morton. The 33-year-old Morton died in a vehicular accident late Sunday night in Trinidad and Tobago, hours after representing his local club Queen’s Park in a game.
“We have been shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Runako Morton at the tragically young age of 33,” said CSA acting president AK Khan.
“It is particularly sad when a young man who has the talent to offer so much to his community is cut down in the prime of his life.
“We remember Runako well from the West Indies tour of South Africa in the 2007/08 season when he played in both the Test match and ODI series.
“On behalf of both myself and the entire Cricket South Africa family I convey my deepest sympathy to his family, friends and the entire West Indies cricket community.”
Morton played three Tests in that series with modest success, garnering just 100 runs from six innings. His four ODIs on that tour yielded 73 runs.
Overall, Morton played 15 Tests, 56 one-dayers and seven Twenty20 Internationals in an international career spanning nine years.
