Woman killed in Lombard Street accident

– skull crushed by sand truck
THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Savitree Chandra and her boyfriend were travelling to the city on a motorcycle from Lot 38 Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara yesterday when, at about 07:15 hrs, she fell off the machine in Lombard Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown and had her skull crushed by an oncoming sand truck.
Chandra’s boyfriend, the driver of the motorcycle, received injuries about his body, and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) for medical attention.
When the Guyana Chronicle, visited the family at their Covent Garden home, devastated family members were trying to console Chandra’s mother, Bibi Ali, who was still in a state of shock and horror at the tragedy.
Mustering enough courage to speak, Ali said, “He (the boyfriend) was giving her a drop to work. They just left Covent Garden when it happened. I am still not clear on what happened; they didn’t tell me anything, really.”
The grieving mother said no one has as yet made clear what had really transpired, but she was told that the truck had hit the two on the motorcycle, causing Chandra to fall off the bike and into its path.
Officers at the Ruimveldt Police Station have allegedly told Ms. Bibi Ali they could not give the family any substantial information until Chandra’s boyfriend has been discharged from hospital and could give a statement.
“They said they waiting on him to come out to give a statement. He is in hospital, he was injured too, but I can’t say how badly, because he was already in the hospital when we got there… They tell me to come home, I don’t know anything.”
Savitree Chandra was an employee at the Muneshwer’s General Store, and was said to be a person of good character.
“She (was) a very quiet person; when she home she deh inside. She was a very loving person,” the grieving woman said. Chandra leaves to mourn her mother and only sibling.
Meanwhile, a police press release stated that investigations revealed that Chandra was the pillion rider on a motor cycle, the driver of which attempted to overtake a motor lorry and the handle of the motor cycle came into contact with the lorry. As a result, they fell onto the roadway, and Savitree Chandra was run over by the lorry. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.
The drivers of the motor lorry and the motor cycle are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
