CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Parmanand Persaud said swift action by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has resulted in the clearing of the Devonshire Castle sluice channel on the Essequibo Coast.
It will drain some 7,000 acres of rice cultivation in the area, now that the silt and sling mud from the Atlantic Ocean has been cleared, he said.
Persaud said the Regional Administration quickly set up a mobile pump next to the sluice to drain excess rainfall water from canals in the backlands and residential areas during the period the channel was silted up.
The NDIA has two excavators on pontoons in the Atlantic Ocean which is used to desilt sluice channels in the coastal areas.
Region Two is expected to get its own pontoons with long boom excavators shortly to maintain outfall channels, Persaud said.
