‘This time is not long time’ – Rogers
THRICE has Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers fought Dexter Marques and on all three occasions he has ended up on the losing side, but when the two meet this Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for the World Boxing Council/CABOFE flyweight title, Rogers promises to turn things around. “This time is not long time. Yes he has beaten me before, in fact he did it three times, with the first defeat being a, 11th round TKO in his second professional fight, after he had chalked up a first-round TKO over Carlton Skeete in his first fight.
“I am confident of victory this time around. When I suffered my first loss to him, I was angry hence I asked to fight him again to avenge that loss, but I ended up losing again, even though I felt to myself that I won that fight, so I asked for a third match,” stated the pint-size Rogers.
He added, “I lost the third encounter fair and square and there is no doubt about that, since I was not fully prepared for what he was bringing to the ring. Yes, I know that is a foolish statement to make, but having done that, I am confident that this time around, Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques will be on the losing end.
“I am so confident of victory that I have taken my training to another level, doing so with lots of intensity both in the gym and on the road. I am up at 04:00hrs in the morning where I do between five to six miles of jogging (with shadow-boxing technique), followed by calisthenics and deep breathing exercises.”
“When I am finished, I head home take a rest then hit the gym around 16:00hrs, where I do glove work with Kelsie George and Richard Williamson, since I am leaving no stones unturned in my bid to avenge my losses to him.”
The 37-year-old Rogers whose record reads 5-12, said he is on a revenge path, as he looks to get a shot at the boxers who defeated him, before he calls time on his career in the ring and turn his attention to coaching in the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG), which he owns.
“I am sorry for Marques, as he is a marked man to me and after Saturday, February 25, he will no longer be such in my book, as I will be taking care of him in style and fashion, coming away with not only a win for Orlon Rogers, but Berbice as well.”
Looking ahead to the WBC Cup Championships, Rogers said he would welcome the opportunity to step into the ring with the more elite boxers in his category from around the world, as he would not only be rewarded handsomely, but also gain recognition and experience, using the latter to pass onto his charges.
Other fights on the card which punches off at 20:00hrs will see Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry defend his bantamweight title against Selwyn Lett, Revlon Lake and Miguel Antoine meeting for the super lightweight title, Edmond De Clou facing Kevin Placide for the middle weight crown and Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite opposing Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox for the heavyweight title.
Admission to the venue is $3 000 for ringside and $1 500 for stands and the GBBC wishes to let the boxing public know there will be no live broadcast of the action on NCN Channel 11, while the monthly pass issued for their ProAm cards will not be accepted.
