-to push community development
AIMING to achieve the objectives of their motto — total development of the body, the mind and the environment through education and physical and social activities — the Lower East Coast Demerara villages of Goedverwagting, Plaisance and Sparendaam have formed a non-governmental organization to create activities towards this end. The organization is called the Plaisance Sparendaam Goedverwagting Development Association, and its management is comprised as follows: President — Mr. Joseph Benjamin, Vice president — Pastor Clifford Zammett, Secretary — Mr. Clarence Bazil, Treasurer — Mrs. Lillian Miller, Asst. Sec/ Treasurer — Mr. Junior Andrew Hercules, Trustees — Mrs. Beryl Haynes, Mr. Raymond Barton, Mr. Aubrey Hutson; Committee members — Mr. Gordon Bazil, Miss June Halley, Mr. Ivor Thomas and Mr. Rodwell Lewis.
This organization, established in February 2011, is an amalgam of the Plaisance/Industry development Association and the Plaisance/Goedverwagting development Association. It was registered under the Friendly Societies Act Chapter 36:04; its registration number is 1231 at the Guyana Revenue Authority.
Affiliated groups are the Plaisance Dorcas Club, the Plaisance Cricket Club, and the Plaisance Guardian Basketball Club.
The organization meets every second and fourth Thursday at the Industry Community Centre. The association has created and commenced working through a methodology of the following: Educaton, culture, sports, senior citizens, civic responsibilities, health and sanitation, economic activities, religions, and expansion of support activities. Activities have so far, been the painting of two pedestrian crossings, one on the Plaisance Public Road and the other on the Plaisance Railway Embankment Road. These projects have seen tremendous community response and engagement.
Through its sports plan, the association has just been able to accomplish the major task of launching a steering committee for the sport of table tennis, and has also conducted a number of training clinics in schools on the East Coast Demerara.
The Table Tennis Steering Committee was successfully able to promote it first open table tennis tournament, last Sunday (February 12, 2012) at the Plaisance Community Centre.
With aid from its parent body, it got donations of a tennis table, racquets, net and balls to develop the sport.
