— GWI willing to provide advice and assistance if region has a plan
THE Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has consistently provided technical assistance to Region Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) to address water supply challenges, despite Mahdia’s relevant supply infrastructure not being within the GWI purview, but is instead governed by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC). The utility company made this statement yesterday in a press release called in response to a Stabroek News letter titled “Mahdia, Campbelltown without water since last June, says AFC”, dated Thursday, February 16, 2012.
The company is prepared to provide assistance to the community of Campbelltown through the RDC, according to GWI’s Director of Capital Investment and Planning, Ramchand Jailal.
“The Campbelltown pipelines are plagued by blockages resulting from damages due to illegal mining activities within the community and lack of maintenance to the supply system; hence the water supply has been severely hampered. Despite efforts to correct initial challenges, constant dredging by miners has severely affected the infrastructure which supplies the community.”
The GWI Director reiterated that the utility company is willing to provide necessary technical advice and assistance when a plan of action has been determined by the relevant authorities.
