POLICE are intensifying their investigations into a daring daylight multi-million-dollar robbery on a popular business premises on Sheriff Street, Subryanville, early Friday morning. During the robbery carried out on Raj Jewellery, Raj Fashion and The Grill, located on Sheriff Street, sexagenarian proprietor, Rudath Persaud was severely beaten and had to be rushed to hospital, suffering severe injuries to one eye, and suspected fractured bones in the face. He is said to be currently hospitalised at a city hospital.
The incident happened around 09:45 hrs, police said, as Persaud was in the store which is currently conducting a ‘Blow Out Sale’. According to the police report, Persaud was in the store when four men, neatly dressed and appearing to be customers, walked into the store, whisked out handguns and held him at gunpoint. They assaulted him about the body, dealing him several cuffs, mainly in the face. They then tied him up with duct tape and hid him behind some clothing in the boutique.
As the men proceeded on their rampage, they ransacked the facilities, focusing their attention mainly on the jewellery store. Having bound and gagged the proprietor, the men moved to the display showcase which they cleared of the gold and diamond jewellery exhibited.
In the process, the men also robbed the business of Gy$400,000 and an undisclosed sum of US currency, while relieving Persaud of his licensed .38 Taurus revolver and six rounds, along with a cellular phone.
Police said no shots were fired, but the proprietor was cuffed and kicked several times. It is understood the men later took Persaud upstairs where they ransacked his home and took away a quantity of cash and other valuables before making an un-intercepted escape.
The police were later summoned and commenced their investigation.
