Essequibians express gratitude to Government, others for rescue
SCORES of fishermen and residents of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) have expressed thanks to the Government, the Police and Army for their quick and prompt response to pirate attacks off the Pomeroon River mouth last Friday. One of the grateful fishermen, Kishore, of ExMouth on the Essequibo Coast, said the ranks in uniform must be commended for doing an excellent job in their search and rescue operation.
Others said they are proud of the Government’s swift reaction and specially thanked President Donald Ramotar and his Cabinet, particularly Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Alli Baksh, who was on the ground coordinating operations and meeting with distressed relatives of the victims who were beaten and terrorised.
Recently elected Chairman of Region Two, Mr. Parmanand Persaud was also with Minister Baksh and Councillor of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mr. Brian Persaud, giving support, on behalf of the Regional Administration, in the form of fuel and boats to aid in the rescue of the stranded fishermen.
Several Essequibians said the Army sending helicopters to search the Atlantic Ocean for the missing men and their boats has shown the great concern and interest of the Government in protecting fishermen and their property, while at sea to fish and feed the population.
Fishermen were also thankful to Transport Minister, Mr. Robeson Benn and his ministry for their assistance and concern, in taking action to make the rescue successful.
However, despite all that happened on the high seas last Friday, the fisher folks are determined to resume fishing, maintaining that it is their mean of earning a livelihood and that fish is a major part of Guyanese food.
