Too early to ascertain rainfall impact on sugar

– GuySuCo CEO
CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO), Paul Bhim on Monday said it is too soon to tell if the continued heavy rains experienced over the past week will affect the set Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) 2012 production target of 265,000 tonnes.
Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, he assured, however, that every effort is being made to ensure that the factories begin operation as soon as possible.
“We were supposed to start grinding last week and were anxious to get going as we do have financial obligations,” he stated.
According to him, in order to get the canes to the factories, there needs to be proper access but now the roads are almost impassable due to the heavy rains.
In addition to this, there will be poor turnout of harvesters who are also likely to be deterred by the weather conditions and this will affect production, since the continuing rains will cause the canes to become over ripe.
He said: “I hope the weather improves. We need to have the roads dry to get the canes to the factory. If it continues to rain, you will find low turnout of harvesters…we are keeping our fingers crossed but it is way too early to tell if it will affect the target.”
Bhim said, presently, pumps are in operation to drain the excess water off the cultivated lands.
