… DCC to hold ‘Night of Reflection’
FORMER Guyana and West Indies skipper and Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) Clive Lloyd yesterday signed the Book of Condolence that was opened for the late Robert Williams at City Hall. The 62-year-old Williams, a former Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Georgetown and president of the Guyana National Dominoes Federation (GNDF), died Tuesday last after a brief illness.
In an invited comment with Chronicle Sport, Lloyd said he met Robert Williams a few years ago and had promised to donate a trophy towards a dominoes competition, and, despite his passing, will be looking to do so in the not-too-distant future.
“He (Williams) has always been a great gentleman, one who was kind and easy to work along with and I think he was probably in the type of job that best suited him, which was dealing with the City of Georgetown and its occupants.
“When you look at all the different tributes that were pouring, you can see he was a popular individual who will be missed by all who came into contact with him in some form or the other and while I take this opportunity to extend my sympathy to his family members and the staff here at City Hall, I wish his soul a peaceful rest.”
President of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Alfred Mentore in his reflection, described the late Williams as an individual who was a great part of the Queenstown-based club which produced players of the calibre of Lloyd, Lance Gibbs and the Harper siblings Roger and Mark.
“He served as vice-president of the club for a number of years and at this time when we are celebrating our Centenary Anniversary, his expertise in the decoration of the club would be missed and we really regret his passing, while extending our condolences to his family, friends and staff of City Hall.”
Mentore said a Night of Reflection will be held for Williams at the club this Sunday from 19:00hrs and asked persons who knew or were associated with the late Deputy Mayor in some form or the other, to come out and share their tributes and thoughts.
Meanwhile, the late Williams, who also held the office of a Justice of Peace and Commissioner of Oaths, will be laid to rest next Wednesday at the St Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Port Mourant, Berbice.
This follows a viewing of the body at City Hall between 08:30hrs and 09:30hrs, where persons can also give their tributes, along with a church service from 10:00hrs at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam, before proceeding to Port Mourant for a 15:00hrs service.
