Region 5 under threat from Mahaica, Mahaicony rivers — Regional Chairman

— all other regions have passed the worst
WATERS of the Mahaica and Mahaicony rivers have been rising “tremendously”, and Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) residents are greatly concerned by this development.
Regional Chairman, Dindrabhan Bisnauth, who spoke with the Chronicle by telephone yesterday, made this disclosure and added that all villages in Region 5 remain water-logged, but drainage works are currently being carried out. Little can be done, he observed, and the region will have to seek assistance from certain agencies.
According to Bisnauth, Region 5 may have to eventually borrow some drainage pumps from sister agencies to alleviate the drainage situation, which he surmises will continue for the next few days.
Meanwhile, Chairman Julius Faerber said flooding in Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) is to no alarming extent, but authorities are monitoring all of the sluices in that region because a few low-lying areas are flooded, but all of the pumps are operable.
Bhadase Poonai, Regional Executive Officer for Region 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne), said the rainfall yesterday was not as bad as last Sunday. Flooding occurred in New Amsterdam, Canje and Rose Hall Town, but all the pumps in the region are working.
Mr. Peter Ramotar, Regional Executive Officer for Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni), yesterday told this publication that there was no immediate alarm in the region. He explained that when the tide is in, water lodges in certain areas. However, as soon as the tide recedes, the water goes down.
According to Ramotar, the problem arises when the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) fails to clear the drains as they should. Nevertheless, he maintained that the flooding was of no great magnitude.
Sunil Singh, Regional Executive Officer for Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), said that region has encountered no major problem due to heavy rainfall. He noted that rainfall was not as heavy as that of Sunday, and that all the drainage pumps were operable.
No official from Region 4 could be reached for comment.
