APNU and the AFC have collaboratively ruined their reputation. As we speak, they exist with a fragile political future for their disregard of parliamentary democracy, in a manner that places Guyana, at the peril of losing admiration for its democratic credentials.
As if that is not enough, they hastily plunge into the jokers’ lineup, to secure their 15 minutes of fame, instead of contributing a response beyond their predictable reaction.
If Guyana is going to move forward, then it must be through our collective efforts of civility, respect, fairness and objectivity in our approaches and actions. And if politicians, like those in APNU and AFC have any contribution to this milieu of rational, progressive thinking, then they must banish this wild resort, to cheap politicking. In Guyana, we are too quick to condemn; too quick to become suspicious; and too quick to condone practices against our conscience.
It would be important to know whether the principals in APNU and AFC are prepared to tell Guyanese that their support for Mr. Kissoon is unequivocal even with his ‘unsatisfactory’ performance at the university at the expense of students. Mr. Kissoon is the one lecturer who has never done any publication (please note that newspaper articles are not academic publications) in his more than two decades as a lecturer. There are reports about numerous complaints against his mediocre-style teaching and paltry performance at the university. One only needs to look at his daily activities of street-protest and a plethora of non-academic work to get a full sense of how much the university students have been short-changed (during his tenure).
The second point to note on this matter is the procedural mishap which saw one arm of the university renewing Mr. Kissoon’s contract outside the approval of the Council which is illegal according to UG’s regulation. This is an important issue. Was this mishap intended to create a stir, to go after the university’s administration, when and if it acted against this illegality?
Those who are struggling to link Mr. Kissoon’s contract termination to some vehemence of the PPP/C Administration must be reminded that Mr. Kissoon served 19 of his 26 years as a university lecturer, under the very PPP/C Administration he condemns, vilifies and castigates. His wife has been in the employ of this said PPP/C Administration- for the last 19years too, unprovoked and untouched, but she is said to be PERFORMING.
APNU and the AFC may see some political value in pursuing this matter and that is alright too, but they must remember that to undermine the independence of the university is nowhere related to good-governance.
A fraudulent posture
