Parmanand Persaud, Vishnu Samaroo elected Chairman, Vice-Chairman
FORMER People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament (MP), 46-year-old Mr. Parmanand Persaud has been elected Chairman of Region 2(Pomeroon/Supenaam). Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, previously Vice-Chairman, was unanimously re-elected to the same position at a special meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in the boardroom of the Regional Administration at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, on Tuesday.
Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mr. Sunil Singh conducted the elections following a proclamation by President Donald Ramotar.
After the meeting was called to order and prayers and the National Pledge recited, the names of the 17 elected councillors were announced. After they were seated around the conference table, the Oath of Office was administered individually by the REO and witnessed by scores of Government officers, past councillors, parliamentarians, senior Police officers, representative of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) officials and representatives of the (PPP/C) and the Prime Ministerial Candidate for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Dr. Rupert Roopnarine.
The other 10 PPP/C members of the RDC who were sworn are: Farouk Khan, Wazeeda Bacchus, Arlyene Boyant, Vilma Da Silva, Ulic Henry, Omesh Oditt, Basil Persaud, Shanta Springer, Rosaline Thompson and Rudolph Williams.
The three representing APNU are Linda Duncan, Wazir Latiff and Rudolph Garraway, while the AFC members are Nateram and Archie Cordis.
However, Rudolph Garraway of APNU did not take the oath because sickness caused him to be absent.
After the elections, Chairman Persaud pledged to work in the interest of the people and continue development across the Region.
He also promised to collaborate with the Private Sector and the leaders in all nine Amerindian communities to push development.
Persaud thanked the leaders and members of the PPP/C for putting forward his name as a candidate and having the confidence in him, stating that he would give of his best in service to Region Two.
He and Samaroo were both congratulated by the Mayor of Anna Regina, Mr. Sammy Persaud and Ms. Yvonne Pearson, on behalf of the National Toshoas Council.
MP Cornel Damon added his congratulations also to the other councillors.
The new Council is expected to meet on February 14 for their first statutory meeting when sub-committees would be named.
