OPR investigating missing cocaine in Batavia Island drug bust

CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday disclosed that the police are continuing investigations into the disappearance of one packet of cocaine, evidence in an active court matter, although the ranks involved have not been placed under close arrest, but the matter is pending.
On Friday, January 20, 2012, ten police ranks from the Narcotics Branch and the Tactical Services Unit, headed by an officer, uplifted 137 packets of cocaine from Police Headquarters for escort to Bartica in relation to the trial of five men who have been charged following the interdiction of a quantity of cocaine in a boat at Batavia Island, Cuyuni River, during June last year.
The case was called and postponed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, following which the cocaine was escorted back to Police Headquarters. While the cocaine exhibits were being lodged at Police Headquarters, one packet containing approximately one kilogramme of cocaine was discovered missing.
Investigations into this matter are being conducted by the GPF Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
