US$2.1M generator set arrives

-to replace damaged Garden of Eden unit
AS the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) strives to maintain and further expand its generation capacity, the company Saturday welcomed the arrival of a new Wartsila generator at the John Fernandes Wharf, Water Street, Georgetown
GPL’s Divisional Director of Operations, Elwyn Marshall, who was on site to oversee offloading of the engine on its arrival, said that the 5.5 megawatt unit will be installed at Garden of Eden power station on the East Bank Demerara. The engine was procured at a cost of US$2.1M.
“This engine will replace the one that failed in January 2011, at Garden Eden, bringing the plant back to its full capacity of 22 Mw,” Marshall said.
Marshall said the engine should be in full operation by mid-February, since it will be installed on the existing foundation.
The power generated by the Garden of Eden plant is being fed into the Demerara grid.
The absence of one engine at the Garden of Eden plant, he said, did not create any fall short in the system, since backup systems were put in place to meet the demands of the Demerara grid.  (GINA)
