… Tournament to bounce off January 27
RAMESH Sunich, proprietor of Trophy Stall, Bourda Market yesterday continued his generosity to sports, this time to the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) as he undertook the sponsorship of the Association’s Basketball League which is set to bounce off on January 27.
The tournament dubbed the ‘Trophy Stall Basketball League’ will be played at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court, featuring seven affiliated clubs in Linden with matches set to be played every Wednesday and over the weekends.
At a simple but significant ceremony held at the Bourda Market location, Sunich handed over all the trophies and medals to the LABA executives and further committed his entity’s willingness to make the event an annual fixture.
He said that while he’s actively involved in a variety of sports, basketball through various promoters, has been very munificent towards his business, especially the people of Linden.
Sunich said that apart from basketball, the people have made Trophy Stall their priority for choices when purchasing trophies for their events and as such he feels that in sponsoring the LABA league, he is making a refund to the Linden community.
Meanwhile, upon accepting the trophies, LABA president Capt. Eon Murray said that Trophy Stall’s input came at an important juncture for basketball in Linden since it’s the first major tournament under his administration.
The League he said is seen as imperative to the LABA given the fact it will identify Linden’s top teams in respective order upon its completion.
Murray, a Captain in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), said that he’s happy with Sunich and Trophy Stall’s intervention in basketball and said that it will be played in a highly competitive way.
Up for grabs are the winners’ and runner-up trophies, all of which will be accompanied with medals (except for fourth place), along with the Most Valuable Player (MVP), best defensive player and most disciplined team.
The seven teams participating are Amelia’s Ward Jets, Kashif and Shanghai Kings, Half Mile Bulls, Retrieve Raiders, Victory Valley Royals, Wismar Pistons and Block 22 Flames.
Matches will be played in a round-robin format where the top four teams at the end of the round will play in semi-finals and the final.
