We have to get rid of the armed gangs

A MOST dangerous development in Guyana today is the prevalence of armed gangs which invade persons’ homes and rob, hurt, injure and even kill innocent persons in their quest for money, loot and valuables.
These gangs are a menace and disgrace to society and not only cause Guyanese to leave the country but constantly tarnish our image here and abroad.
Thee gangs, often numbering three, four or more use cell phones for communication and arm themselves with knives or guns with which they terrorise their victims in their nefarious schemes. Many individuals are left physically and psychologically scared from the attacks of the hooligans.
The issues of preventing and stopping attacks need to be given far more attention than is presently being given and our politicians, policemen and religious personnel have to cease focusing so much on issues which are of far less consequence than the dangerous, demotivating and debilitating matter of armed robberies and armed criminals.
For a start, if we want to reduce armed robberies, policemen will have to do more patrolling so that potential criminals can be questioned, searched and/or arrested. Investigations need to be intensified and followed up, and the laws need to be amended where they are found to be too lenient. These and other measures, including the use of the Church and other institutions are very urgent if we are to diminish the debilitating effects of armed robbery.
