MINIBUS driver, Jaikumar Persaud, of Lot 1 Rampoor, Corriverton, was sentenced to three years imprisonment yesterday. He was found guilty, by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at Whim Court, of causing the death of pensioner William Cort, of Manchester, another Corentyne village, on July 28, 2009.
Police prosecutor, Roberto Figueira led evidence to prove that the 83-year-old pedal cyclist was attempting to cross the main Corentyne thoroughfare when he was struck by a speeding minibus, BJJ 4354, shortly after 08:50 hrs.
The injured Cort was taken to Port Mourant Hospital, at Corentyne, then to New Amsterdam Hospital, in Berbice where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
