A PLANTAIN farmer and his employee are nursing gunshot wounds following a shooting incident at their farm in an area commonly referred to as ‘Sixteen feet’, in the backlands of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice. Vijay Ramdass known as Rohan alias ‘Bruckback’, 34 said Hasrat Abrahim called ‘Boy’, 17, on entering the cultivation plot accidently walked into a hook trap, resulting in injuries to his right foot.
Ramdass used a cellular phone to call his sibling, Jagdeo, who arrived on a motorcycle to transport the injured teenager.
In the meantime, Ramdass boarded his wooden boat and was taking Abrahim along the sideline dam waterway en route to Skeldon Hospital when the vessel encountered mechanical difficulties.
While he was attempting to rectify the problem, Ramdass recalled seeing two men, with whom he had previously conducted business, armed with a pump-action shotgun, approaching on a motorcycle and firing shots, which resulted in him suffering injury to his right eye, prior to falling overboard.
Other shots were fired in the direction of Abrahim who was trying to escape.
Ramdass reported that, on returning to the boat, they attempted to go back to the farm but were confronted by three more known persons, who were also armed and discharged several rounds.
The victims sought refuge in the nearby bushes and their attackers fled the scene.
An eyewitness who saw what transpired and had gone to get help returned and took the wounded men to the Skeldon Hospital, from where Ramdass was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Medical personnel confirmed that a pellet is lodged in his right eye and a bullet is in his back.
Police are continuing investigations into the shootings for which the motive is, so far, unknown.
