Trench-cleaning contractors given ultimatum on quality work
REGIONAL Executive Officer (REO) of Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Sunil Singh, has warned trench-cleaning contractors to do quality work or lose their contracts. Addressing them at a special meeting in the regional boardroom at Anna Regina, on the Essequibo Coast, last Wednesday, he said they are not doing their jobs how they are contracted to and he would not hesitate to terminate their agreements.
Singh said that the administration has received several complaints from farmers and other members of the public, at recent community meetings, too, about the cleaners not doing properly what they are being paid for by Government.
The REO said the cleaning of the waterways is not being done properly nor the weeding of six feet of trench parapets according to what is stipulated.
Singh also cautioned that the undertakings must be completed according to contract specifications before the 15th day of the month and claims submitted to rangers by the 20th day.
Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, said the Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department will be working with the Water Users Associations (WUAs) and farmers to monitor the work of the trench cleaners and contractors and signatories to their claims for payment.
